Builders, like the boats they construct, come in all
shapes and sizes. The success of your project absolutely demands that
you find one who not only has the expertise to do the job, but one that
also provides a level of support and confidence to make the overall
experience not only successful but enjoyable. Some small yards with
limited facilities regularly turn out exquisite work. Large
sophisticated builders with large staffs, and extensive facilities
generally do the same in a much more structured environment.
Each of these yards often has its own quite different
price tag. That doesn’t mean that each isn’t worth the price that they
charge.
A small yard, like any small business, can often change
gears more quickly and seem more responsive. It may appear easier to get
things the way you want. Large yards may not seem as open to suggestion
but have additional resources to guarantee that the unexpected doesn’t
become a problem.
A yard of either size could be best depending on your
wallet and your temperament. Small yards nurture a sense of individual
involvement. Large yards provide a sense of structured security.
Whichever you choose make sure above all you know, like, and trust the
people you will be working with. That is probably the most important
test of all.
But that's just my opinion.
