Sometimes custom designs are the logical choice...
other times, tailored but
off-the-rack works just fine.
I have written on a number of occasions about adaptation.
What I’ve found is that many people can find boats that suit them in
every way except… for specifics. Maybe it’s the layout, the equipment or
how one, the other, or both are installed. Sadly that’s where production
boat builder’s options become really limited. They often can’t make the
changes that’ll make the boat work for you. Some builders, in all
candor, won’t make any changes at all.
Of course that’s always been the argument for custom boats. Truth be
told, however, an owner may not need a full custom project if they find
a boat that suits their needs and they can work with a builder or
designer to tailor that platform to their own requirements. On many
occasions we have been able to help owners with preexisting designs. We
are expanding that policy. For the first time in thirty years we are
making a number of our most noteworthy designs more easily available as
stock plans online. If one of these fine boats is a perfect match:
great. If it offers the space, but needs to be tweaked, you, your
builder or we can help you make the necessary adjustments. Your benefit
is a great boat designed for a greatly reduced price.
What’s special about our stock plans is that they were originally
developed as custom projects for individuals or builders. They are not
short-sets drawn as “stock plans”. As a result our designs are loaded
with the kind of real-world details that a builder needs. They are not
padded with free dinghy plans or drawings of how to cast your own
hardware. I encourage you to check out the “Stock Plan” pages on our
newly updated nevilleboats.com. Download our affordable study plans then
call or email to discuss how we can tailor one of these great boats for
you.
But that’s just my opinion.
